LOCATION
The Gorham-MacBane Public Library is situated within
Springfield's Historic Preservation District at 405
White Street.
LIBRARY HOURS
The library is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday
from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to
5 p.m.
VISION STATEMENT
The citizens of Springfield and Robertson County
will have the information and materials necessary for
independent and personal growth.
MISSION STATEMENT
Gorham-MacBane Public Library furnishes materials
and services that help people of all ages in the community
to continue their education independently, arouse curiosity
for further study and help with scholastic studies.
The library strives to provide patrons with current
materials of various kinds and promotes active use of
the library facilities by all patrons.
HISTORY
A free library for Springfield and Robertson County
was established in 1923 by the Springfield Short Story
Club and was first housed at the Glenn Memorial building
from 1946 until the Gorham-MacBane Public Library opened
its doors in 1969.
STAFF
The library is staffed by five (5) full-time employees,
including the Director and the Children's Librarian,
and nine (9) part-time employees.
GETTING A CARD
Use of the Gorham-MacBane Public Library is not
limited to residents of Robertson County. Residents
of surrounding counties in Tennessee and Kentucky are
patrons of the library.
In order to check-out items you
must first obtain a library card. In making an application
for a library card, it will be necessary for you to
present a document with your current mailing address
on it such as a driver's license, check book, telephone
bill or utility bill. You will also be required to submit
the name, address and telephone number of a contact
person. The contact person must be someone who does
not reside in your household.
CHECKING OUT
Books, magazines and audio materials are checked
out for two (2) weeks and the overdue fine is ten cents
($0.10) a day per item.
Video materials are checked out
for one (1) week and the overdue fine is one dollar
($1.00) a day per item.
Patrons who owe more than five
dollars ($5.00) in fines or have items overdue more
than thirty (30) days are not allowed to check out items
or use computers until their debts have been cleared.
OTHER SERVICES
The Gorham-MacBane Public Library also provides
the following services:
- Specific book titles can be
acquired through interlibrary loan.
- Seven (7) computers with Internet
access are available free to patrons, but there are
time limits.
- The library conference room
is available for use by groups during regular hours
of operation. It is necessary to contact the library
staff well ahead of time in order to reserve the room
because the conference room is used for regular library
programming as well.
- Faxes may be sent or received
by patrons at a charge of one dollar ($1.00) per page.
- Copier service is available
at a charge of fifteen cents ($0.15) per copy or twenty-five
cents ($0.25) per copy for front and back. Ten (10)
or more copies of the same item are ten cents ($0.10)
each.
- The library is an approved site
for the Tennessee Boating Test. Testing takes place
Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
- Voter registration forms may
be obtained throughout the year; and Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) income tax forms and instructions can
be obtained during the months of February, March and
April of each year.
PROGRAMS
The library offers a variety of programs including
the following:
- Lap-sit for Toddlers: Monday
at 10:30 a.m.
- Preschool Story Time: Wednesday
at 10:30 a.m.
- School-age Program: Thursday
at 2:30 p.m. during the summer months
- Summer Reading Program: Preschool
through high school
- Summer Teen Program events:
Check with the library staff for times
- Fall Reading Fun: Preschool
through 3rd grade two (2) weeks during the fall
- Adult Book Club: Last Monday
of the month at 3:30 p.m.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS
The library has various outreach programs. Please
contact the library staff for information about these
programs.
GENEALOGY RESEARCH
The library has materials for genealogy research.
The Robertson County Times and the Springfield Herald
are available on microfilm as well as many county records
and some church records. Census records and files collected
by Jean Durrett are also available.
MEMORIAL GIFTS
The library accepts memorial and honor gifts. In
order to place a book or make a donation to the library,
please call 384-5123. The library prefers to purchase
the books placed in the library in order to fit the
book to the person. The library also has a building
fund to which donations may be made in honor or memory
of persons. The family of the person honored by any
memorial or gift is always notified by the library staff.
FUTURE EXPANSION
The Board of Directors of the Gorham-MacBane Public
Library is currently working with the City of Springfield
and Robertson County to prepare plans for the future
expansion and renovation of the library at its present
location. The city and county are in the process of
acquiring the necessary land for the expansion and an
architectural firm has been retained to design the improvements.
In addition to public funding from
the City of Springfield and Robertson County, the Library
Board is looking for private donations and grants from
nonprofit organizations, corporations, businesses and
individuals to help defray the costs to the city and
county of designing, constructing, furnishing and equipping
the new and renovated structure.
JURISDICTION
The Gorham-MacBane Public Library's annual operating
budget is funded equally by the City of Springfield
and Robertson County. The Gorham-MacBane Public Library
Board of Directors oversees the operation of the library,
establishes policies and hires the Library Director.
The State of Tennessee supports
the library through the Warioto Regional Library Center.
Although the library does not receive monetary support
from this organization, its does receive educational
support, books, videos and tapes.
LIBRARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Library Board of Directors meets at the library
on the second (2nd) Friday of every odd-numbered month
at 11 a.m. and the public is invited to attend. The
members of the Library Board are as follows:
