                                    Traffic Unit

 In addition to providing 24-hour coverage to the city of Springfield, the Traffic Unit is also dedicated to keeping Springfield roadways moving during delays, reroutes and accident scenes. The traffic team performs traffic control at civic functions, sporting events, processions and parades.

The Traffic Units primary goal is to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians by reducing accidents, saving lives and by facilitating the safe and efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the City of Springfield. The Traffic Unit is a line of support that provides expertise to the department in the areas of accident investigation, drunk and/or impaired driving detection and arrest and the operation of speed detection, Radar/Lidar. This unit is responsible for the investigation of all minor, serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents that occur within the city limits. The Unit investigates citizen complaints of speeding vehicles, reckless driving, illegal parking and other traffic related issues.

Officers in the Traffic Unit have participated in a variety of specialized trainings in order to do their jobs. Some of the specialized training includes Radar/Lidar operation, At-Scene Traffic Investigation, Accident Investigation, Accident Reconstruction, Grade Crossing Collision Investigation, DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety, Advance Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Car Seat Installation.
