GENERAL
INFORMATION
The
Human Resources Department is responsible
for administering the City's personnel
policies and procedures, recruiting
personnel, maintaining records and documents,
managing employee benefits, training
and keeping abreast of federal and state
employment laws to ensure compliance
at all times. The City of Springfield
is a Tennessee Drug Free Workplace employer,
and the Human Resources Department administers
the substance abuse program, risk management
program, and the Employee Assistance
Program (EAP).
EMPLOYMENT
The city currently has 251 full-time
and 4 regular part-time employees, making
it one of the larger employers in the
county. There are a total of 112 different
job classifications in the city. Positions
range from construction and labor, clerical,
grounds keeping, radio dispatch, public
safety, and mechanical to surveying,
engineering, welding, electrical, accounting,
telemetering, laboratory technicians,
programming and management.
City job classifications
are varied and require a mix of skills,
education and experience. Employees
generally have high school diplomas
at a minimum. Many positions require
additional technical or professional
training and education, including 2
or 4-year college degrees or advanced
degrees.
Employees are trained
regularly on job specific skills, and
some employees earn certification in
their areas of responsibility by obtaining
advanced educational credits or licenses.
JOB OPENINGS
Job vacancies for all fifteen departments
in the city are posted at City Hall
and at the various departments throughout
the city. Postings are listed for a
minimum of ten days. Additionally, position
openings are advertised in the weekly
newspaper (Robertson County Times),
on local cable channel 3 and in various
trade publications.
Persons interested
in employment with the City of Springfield
may fill out an interest card at City
Hall at any time. When an appropriate
position becomes available, individuals
are notified by mail. All applications
for job openings must be filled out
and returned to the Human Resources
Department by the posted deadline.
City Hall hours
are 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday. Questions concerning personnel
vacancies, qualifications or other related
matters should be directed to the Human
Resources Department.
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
Employees of the City of Springfield
serve in a probationary status for the
first six (6) months (12 months for
the Police and Fire Departments) of
employment. During this period, employees
are trained and tested to determine
whether they will become full-time employees.
Once an employee
is off probation, the following benefits
provided by the city become available:
Holidays
Employees receive 11 paid holidays
throughout the year.
Vacation Days
Employees earn 8 hours per month of
vacation leave after the first year
of employment. After ten years of
employment, they earn 10 hours
per month. After 15 years of employment,
they earn 12 hours monthly.
Sick Leave
Employees earn 8 hours of sick leave
per month.
Health Insurance
The city pays 85% of the premium for
single and family coverage, and the
employee pays the remaining 15%.
Life Insurance
The city provides $50,000 of term
life and AD&D insurance for all
employees; and employees have the
option to purchase additional
insurance up to $100,000.
Retirement
The city pays 100% of the retirement
for employees. The vesting period
is five years. Retirement benefits
are with the State of Tennessee's
retirement plan (TCRS).
Employee Assistance
Program
The city contracts with Magellan Behavioral
Health for confidential counseling
services for employees, including
stress management,
substance abuse, marital counseling,
grief, depression, etc.
Longevity
Pay
Employees receive longevity pay on
an annual basis from $10 - $30 for
each year of service after five years.
Wellness
Program
The city has a wellness program for
employees, where they can earn additional
time off for documented exercising
at least 3 times per week
for a full three months.
